Coleman was born in Blackpool, Lancashire. She attended Arnold School Blackpool, where she was able to get straight As in her A-levels. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press conference that Coleman will be Matt Smith's partner after Karen Gillan left. Moffat picked her for the role due to the ease with which she worked with Smith and also because she was faster at speaking than Smith.
